DOTHAN, Ala. - The University of North Florida Ospreys used its hefty lead following the opening two rounds of the Atlantic Sun (ASUN) Conference Women’s Golf Championship to cruise to a 27-stroke victory, the seventh largest margin of victory in championship history, and claim the program’s fourth title.
After shooting 28 under-par in the first two rounds, the Ospreys didn’t let a little weather slow them down. In windy conditions for the final round, North Florida recorded the third-best round of the day at 296 to card an 844 (-20) final score - the best 54-hole score and score to par in ASUN Women’s Golf Championship history.
FGCU and Stetson each claimed a share of second place at seven over par for the weekend (871). They were led by Amelie Alcantara (3rd, 211) and Isaki Sakashita (2nd, 210) who were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Brianna Castaldi captured the Ospreys’ first individual champion in the program’s history after she carded a 207 score for the tournament. Castaldi took a defining lead after the opening two rounds at 10 under-par. Despite windy weather conditions at Dothan Country Club on Sunday, the junior from Port Saint Lucie, Fla. was able to hold onto the lead through the final round for the third best 54-hole score in championship history.
With the win, North Florida clinches an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf National Championship.
