FGCU Alum Chris Sale Selected for MLB All-Star Game

FORT MYERS, Fla. - In the midst of a resurgence, former Florida Gulf Coast University pitcher and current Atlanta Braves hurler Chris Sale has been selected to the National League roster for the 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

"It's definitely satisfying and I appreciate it, for sure," Sale said. "You go through some years like I had, you start thinking if this is a real possibility again. To be able to be in this position, having a team take a chance on me, it wasn't an easy trigger to pull -- I'm assuming -- just because of what it looked like previously. They gave me a chance and I'm happy to do this for them."

Sale dealt with injuries from 2020-23, limiting the only player in FGCU history to have is number retired to just 151 innings over the course of four seasons. This year, he has flourished in his first year in the NL. His 11 wins are tied for the lead across MLB, and he ranks in the top three in the NL in ERA (2.71) and strikeouts (127). His WHIP rate of 0.913 is currently the best in the NL. In May, the Lakeland native was named NL Pitcher of the Month.

This marks Sale's eighth selection to the All-Star Game. From 2012-18, Sale was selected to the American League Roster seven times, first as a member of the Chicago White Sox (2012-16) and then Boston Red Sox (2017-18). Sale won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2018.

Sale was the 2010 Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year with FGCU. He was part of the inaugural class of both the FGCU Athletics Hall of Fame (2021) and Atlantic Sun Conference Hall of Fame (2016).
