FGCU Men's Soccer Wins Big in Home Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men's soccer team opened the home portion of its 2025 campaign with an impressive 4-0 shutout of Florida Memorial Tuesday night at Pickering Field.

The Eagles had a memorable offensive night, as four different players scored and a total of five players either scored or handed out assists. FGCU's four goals are the most since the Eagles scored six times in a 6-1 win over Keiser University on Oct. 2, 2024, the 26 shots FGCU finished with is tied for the third-most shots in a single match in program history and the most since the Eagles had 26 shots against Lipscomb on Oct. 19, 2024. Also, FGCU's 18 shots on goal are the most in a single match in program history.

The Eagles (3-2-1) controlled the match from the opening kickoff, peppering the Florida Memorial goal with several shots, but it took more than half an hour for FGCU to find the back of the net. Caio Oliveira finally broke through for the Eagles at 30:17, putting a shot in the bottom right corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season to give FGCU a 1-0 advantage.

FGCU scored again before the break, this time at 41:26, when Pedro Arcoverde netted his first goal of the campaign on an assist by Oliveira, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead at halftime. FGCU outshot Florida Memorial, 12-0, including 7-0 in shots on goal, in the opening 45 minutes. The Eagles also had five corner kicks to the Lions' one, and the two teams were whistled for seven fouls, four on FGCU and three on Florida Memorial.

Florida Memorial (2-2-1) got its first shot of the match at 49:29, when Nikos Koutsourais put a shot towards the bottom left part of the goal, but FGCU goalie Oliver Weng – who got the start for the Eagles – made the save to keep it 2-0 FGCU.

Just more than two minutes later, the Eagles made it 3-0 at 51:32 on Edson Murguia's second goal of the season, a right-footed shot in the lower center of the net. Job Choute got in on the scoring about 15 minutes later, getting his goal off an assist by Brian Lopez to stretch the Eagles' lead to 4-0 at 63:55.

The Eagles kept firing shots at Lion goalie Delgado Villalobos over the final 25 minutes of the match, but FGCU was unable to hit the back of the net again. For the match, FGCU outshot Florida Memorial, 26-8, including 18-5 in shots on goal. The Eagles had 10 corner kicks to Florida Memorial's two, and a total of 17 fouls were called, 10 on FGCU and seven on Florida Memorial.

Choute and Arcoverde led FGCU with four shots apiece, with three of Choute's shots and two of Arcoverde's being on goal. Murguia added three shots, two on goal, and a total of 14 different Eagles had at least one shot in the match. In all, 19 players saw action for FGCU on the night, and Weng made five saves in goal to earn the win and help the Eagles post their first clean sheet of the season.
FGCU is back in action on Sept. 14, when the Eagles host Houston Christian in another non-conference match. Kickoff at Pickering Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
