Sugar Bears Drop 115 in Home Opening Win over Lyon

CONWAY, Ark. – The Sugar Bears' home opener went according to plan, as the Central Arkansas women's basketball team opened the Farris Center with a 115- 43 win Friday night. It marked the third time in two seasons that the Sugar Bears have eclipsed 100 points, and the 11th time in program history scoring at least 110 points.

Central Arkansas (1-1) did the work early, jumping out in the first quarter with defensive pressure that turned into offense and never looked back. Cheyanne Kemp poured in a career-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including three triples. She was one of five Sugar Bears to score in double-figures, including Shae Littleford (16 pts), Bree Stephens (14 pts) Layla Reese (14 pts) and Emerie Bohanon (13 pts). Stephens also added five steals and three blocks in less than 12 minutes of action.

After the sides traded threes to start the game, the Sugar Bears rattled off seven-straight points, leaping out to a multi-possession lead that soon grew to ten in under three minutes. Midway through the first, a fresh wave of Sugar Bears came in and continued to pour it on, forcing turnovers and converting it into buckets on the other end. By the end of the frame, the lead was 22, thanks to a pick-six by Alexis Cox with under a minute left. Ten minutes into the game, nine Sugar Bears had points, and the team had 11 assists on 14 scores.

The second quarter began with the same defensive intensity, forcing multiple turnovers over the first few minutes of the quarter that ended up in scores. The lead grew to 25, then almost immediately up past 30 with a pair of three-pointers and beyond. A three by Bohanon inched the lead up to 38, the most of the first half, and the teams traded scores right before the half ended, sending the Sugar Bears to the locker room with 61 points. It marked the first 50-plus point half by Central Arkansas since January of last year, when the Sugar Bears dropped 57 in the second half against Lipscomb.

It took Central Arkansas three minutes to increase the lead to 50, scoring 13 of the first 14 points of the third quarter to make it 74-24. But the Sugar Bears continued pouring it on, moving the ball and finding open teammates in great spots for open shots. In addition to clean offense, the defense continued to force turnovers, adding eight steals to the count that resulted in 12 more points. Kemp was electric in the frame, scoring 18 points on a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and three triples, outscoring the Scots all by herself, 18 to 17.

Reese hit a jumper with 9:39 in the fourth quarter to push the Sugar Bears over the century mark and bump the lead to over 60. And by this point in the game, it was the Sugar Bear bench getting some reps, including all four Conway Wampus Cats, in Bohanon, Alexis and Alivia Cox, and Kaidyn Beckwith. The four hometown kids got about a minute of run with all four on the court at the same time, getting four defensive stops and finding a score from Bohanon to push the lead over 70.

Up next on the schedule is a trip to northwest Arkansas to face off with the Razorbacks on Monday. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena.
