ATLANTA – Coastal Carolina's Avery McIlwaine became just the second player in CCU history to be chosen the ASUN Conference Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday. McIlwaine's recognition highlighted the 12-member list as voted on by the league's sports information directors and academic administrators.
Five different institutions were represented on the 2023 All-Academic squad, with the Chants, Jacksonville and Liberty all producing three honorees. Kennesaw State had a pair of selections and Lindenwood added one member.
McIlwaine maintains a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA working towards her degree in Recreation and Sport Management. The Alpharetta, Ga., native ranks second for the Chants this season with 52 points on 35 goals and 17 assists. The junior midfielder has recorded 42 draw controls for CCU along with 17 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. For the season, her top performances include a five-goal outing in a victory over Vanderbilt and a four-assist effort versus Campbell. McIlwaine joins former Coastal standout Madeline Bromley (2019) as winners of this prestigious distinction.
The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the ASUN's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team own a 3.50 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's events.
