#3 FGCU Earns Back-to-Back ASUN Championship Titles

NASHVILLE, Tenn - The FGCU Eagles earned back-to-back Atlantic Sun Championship titles after a 3-3 (3-2 PK’s) victory against the North Alabama Lions.

In the first 45 minutes of action, North Alabama was all gas as the Lions scored three goals. Izzi Gurney-Harper got UNA on the board first with a goal in the 29th minute followed by Julia Murdoch extending the lead less than a minute after. Just nine minutes later, Kellie Hovis had the Lions up 3-0 on the Eagles, the first time a conference opponent has scored three goals against the Eagles since Feb. 27, 2021 (North Florida).

In the second half, FGCU’s Erika Zschuppe carried all the momentum the Eagles needed as she tied the tournament single-game record for goals with three. The sophomore scored two goals within two minutes of each other while the equalizer came in the 78th minute. The last 12 minutes were scoreless for both teams to send the match into overtime.

In the first 10 minutes of overtime, both teams went scoreless. FGCU had the best look as the Eagles netted a ball but were called offside. The score remained 3-3 after the second 10 minute overtime period. The ASUN Championship Final went to penalty kicks for the seventh time in league history. The Lions’ Goose Andrews and Briana Eads both made their attempts but FGCU came out on top of the shootout as Zschuppe, Ashley Labbe and Katelyn Kauffman were able to seal the title for the Eagles.

FGCU has earned the league's automatic qualifier and represents the ASUN in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. The Eagles await the selection show on Monday, Nov. 6, to see who they face in the first round of the College Cup.
