NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The North Alabama Lions advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Soccer Championship Final after another shutout performance from Adriana Wright kept Lipscomb scoreless en route to a 1-0 victory.
Wright, the ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded a save in the 18th minute after a yellow card was issued against the Lions that led to a free kick from Lipscomb's Kelli Beiler. Wright came up big again for the Lions in the final minutes of the first half as she stopped a free kick by Freshman of the Year Cash Marella to keep the first 45 minutes of play knotted at 0-0. Lipscomb outshot the Lions 8-4 while UNA led the half in saves, 4-1.
The Lions got on the board first as Adelyn Speight scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. Her score was assisted on by Molly Parham and Goose Andrews. Wright’s five saves in the net helped advance the Lions to their second championship final appearance. 2018 was the first year that North Alabama competed as a Division I program and the Lions marched all the way to the title match in their first season in the ASUN. That year's squad faced off against Lipscomb but was unable to capture the crown, falling 3-2. Thursday's win not only marked the first victory against the Bisons for UNA since joining the lague, but this is also the first time a #4 seed has advanced to tournament finale.
North Alabama now awaits the winner of the #2 Central Arkansas vs #3 FGCU matchup to see who they will face on the pitch on Sunday to crown the 2023 ASUN Champion.
