FGCU's Whetstone Voted #ASUNBVB Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Beach Volleyball All-Academic Team

ATLANTA, Ga. - The ASUN Conference announced FGCU's Kayla Whetstone as the 2021 Beach Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Whetstone highlighted the 10-person All-Academic Team, announced by the league office on Friday.

A Texas native, Whetstone becomes the first Eagle to earn the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in ASUN Beach Volleyball history. An Economics and Finance major with a 3.89 grade-point average, she led FGCU in wins this year with 23 along with her partner Kacie Johnson. The senior went 22-8 in the second slot and picked up one win on court one during the season. Whetstone became the program's all-time wins leader posting a 67-24 (.736) career record. She is the only Eagles player with multiple 20-win seasons and holds the single-season wins record at 24. Whetstone defeated five nationally-ranked teams this season, finding wins over No. 11 FAU, No. 13 FIU (twice), No. 14 Stetson and No. 19 Georgia State. The 2021 Scholar-Athlete of the Year is also a three-time President's List and Dean's List recipient, a seven-time Athletic Director Honor Roll honoree and a 2021 Kavanagh Eagle Scholar-Athlete award co-winner.

The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom. All members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
