ATLANTA, Ga. - This installment of the ASUN Beam Report highlights a new conference initiative titled ASUN Teammates. The ASUN Teammates segment will be a video panel highlighting the thoughts and concerns of our student-athletes, coaches and administrators as well as the surrounding community about race relations in America and the role of sports in that dynamic.
The ASUN Conference moved its official headquarters to Atlanta, Ga., in 2019. The city of Atlanta plays a pivotal role in the pursuit of racial equality. It is the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the most visible advocates of the civil rights movement in American history. Raised here in the Sweet Auburn historic district, which at its heights was the most affluent African American neighborhood in the U.S., King preached just a few blocks from his home at Ebenezer Baptist Church. That same church recently laid to rest late congressman and fellow activist, John Lewis. This city is also home to the Atlanta University Center, the largest consortium of African American private institutions of higher education.
The ASUN Conference stands in support of all of our teammates with love, compassion, and understanding. We will connect through real discussions about race and injustice, and we will strive to make a positive impact on this movement. This topic touches all of us and its importance to our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and their families are far too great to be silent.
