ATLANTA, Ga. - After guiding his team to a two-seed in just its first season in the ASUN, Liberty's Jonathan Embry collects the 2019 ASUN Conference Baseball Player of the Year honor voted on by the leagues coaches.
Embry was a force at the plate this season for the Flames. The junior backstop hit .296 with a .439 on base percentage and a .489 slugging percentage. He led the ASUN in runs scored (51) and walks (50). Embry finished fourth in the conference in home runs and doubles with nine and 14 respectively, while also driving in 37 runs. Defensively, he was rock solid as well as he threw out 33 percent of attempted base stealers and recorded a fielding percentage of .988. Embry was just one of two players who were unanimous All-Conference selections.
After boasting one of the best pitchers in the ASUN a year ago in Frank German, North Florida can now say they have the best pitcher in the league, as Brad Deppermann was voted Pitcher of the Year. Deppermann posted a banner year for the Ospreys, as he became UNF's Division I era career strikeout king. He currently sits with 236 career punchouts. The senior righty also became just the second Osprey to record 100 strikeouts in a season, joining German, who accomplished the feat last season. Deppermann ranks in the top 10 in the ASUN in a plethora of categories, including games started (1st), ERA (1st), innings pitched (1st), strikeouts (1st) complete games (2nd), K/9 (2nd) and wins (6th). He was named ASUN Pitcher of the Week twice this season.
The future is bright for the Stetson Hatters, as they repped a conference best four players on the All-Freshmen Team, including the Freshman of the Year, Daniel Paret. The freshman lefty looks to become the next in the long line of successful hurlers from Stetson. The southpaw went 5-3 this season with a 2.90 ERA, 97 strikeouts (2nd in the ASUN) and an opponents batting average of .210. Paret earned ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors after his breakout performance against nationally ranked Texas Tech, as he held the Red Raiders to two runs on three hits across seven innings. Paret has finished the year strong, as he's allowed just three runs, while striking out 26 over his last 24 innings of work.
After missing all of 2018 with an injury, Jacksonville's Dakota Julylia bounced back nicely to earn ASUN Defensive Player of the Year. Julylia started all but three games this season and posted a .983 fielding percentage and committed just three errors in 179 chances. He and his double play partner, Scott Dubrule, turned 19 double plays this season. With the bat, Julylia notched career-highs in average (.305), RBIs (25), and stolen bases (6).
FGCU Head Coach Dave Tollett picks up his fifth ASUN Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to their fifth ASUN Regular Season title. FGCU enters the postseason with a 34-19 mark, and the top seed in the ASUN Championship after missing the tournament completely in 2018.
