ATLANTA, Ga. - FGCU landed two of the top ASUN Conference Women's Basketball Postseason All-Conference accolades on Thursday with Nasrin Ulel & Head Coach Karl Smesko earning the league's Player of the Year and Coach of the Year distinctions. Kennesaw State's Amani Johnson secured the Freshman of the Year honors, while Stetson's Day'Neshia Banks collected the Newcomer of the Year honor. FGCU's Ty Adderly took home the Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Ulel, a unanimous selection to the All-Conference First Team, averaged a career-high 15.2 PPG to lead the Eagles and place fourth in the ASUN. A junior guard, Ulel joins Sarah Hansen (2013, 2014) and Whitney Knight (2015, 2016) as the only FGCU players to earn Player of the Year distinction. In league games, Ulel averaged 15.0 PPG, while adding 2.8 RPG, 1.9 APG and making 2.8 three's per contest on 44-121 overall from deep.
Smesko collects his ninth ASUN Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Eagles to the No. 1 seed in the ASUN Championship and the program's ninth Regular Season title and eighth since 2011. The Eagles enter postseason play with a 25-4 record and 16-0 mark in league action, the fifth perferct mark in ASUN play for FGCU since 2011.
Kennesaw State's Johnson topped all league freshman in scoring for the season with 9.6 PPG. The freshman from North Versailles, Pa., Johnson is the third-straight Kennesaw State player to earn Freshman of the Year honors, joining Carlotta Gianolla (2017) and Kamiyah Street (2018). The point guard also topped all freshmen with 4.4 APG and 2.3 SPG.
Day'Neshia Banks made an immediate impact for Stetson, transferring in mid-season to help the Hatters to the second seed in the ASUN Championship. The forward from Jacksonville Fla. averaged 14.8 PPG to lead the Hatters as she 46.6% from the floor and added 6.8 RPG. In league play, Banks upped her scoring average to 16.4 PPG, the third-best average of any player in ASUN action.
The third-ever Defensive Player of the Year from FGCU, Ty Adderly joins Brittany Kennedy (2013) and DyTiesha Dunson (2016). Adderly placed third in the league with 8.2 RPG, adding 1.4 SPG and 0.4 BPG as well. One of the top rebounders in FGCU history, the junior forward climbed the ASUN record books to now rank 25th in conference history, just two rebounds shy of becoming the 25th player to eclipse 800 career rebounds.

The 2019 ASUN Women's Basketball Championship begins on Friday, Mar. 8th at four separate quarterfinal sites with FGCU, Liberty, North Alabama and Stetson hosting contests. The semifinals take place on Wednesday, Mar. 13th, while the ASUN Final tips on Sunday, Mar. 17th at 3 PM ET on ESPN+.
