ATLANTA, Ga. - This week, the ASUN Beam Report will focus on ASUN Softball with its first pitch set for this weekend. Last year, the ASUN finished as the sixth-best RPI conference in the nation after finishing fifth in 2017. Boasting six of seven teams in the top-130 of the RPI, the ASUN looks to build on that as the 2019 season brings on additional firepower as Liberty and North Alabama enter the league with well-established programs.
Kennesaw State opens the season as the defending ASUN Regular Season & Tournament Champions after making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament last year. The Owls collected 39 victories last season and posted a 14-3 record in league games. In the Preseason Coaches Poll, the Owls sat in third right behind Liberty and FGCU, while Lipscomb & North Florida claimed fourth and fifth.
Liberty reached the NCAA Regional Final last year and finished #29 in the RPI with a 49-14 record including wins vs. #24 Hofstra & #10 South Carolina in postseason play. FGCU was the top RPI last year in the ASUN at #39 and narrowly missed an NCAA at-large bid. The Eagles tallied a 39-17 record last year as FGCU is focused on returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012. As a whole, the ASUN looks to become a multiple-bid league for the first time since 2014 when three squads earned NCAA spots.
