LakePoint, Ga. - The ASUN Conference awarded the 2018 ASUN Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to FGCU's Mario Leon, announced Tuesday by the conference office at the ASUN Baseball Championship banquet. Leon is joined by 12 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team and marks the first time an FGCU baseball student-athlete has garnered ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

Leon, a senior from Naples, Fla., made 14 starts on the mound for the Eagles in 2018. He posted five victories and finished the season with a 3.05 ERA. The senior struck out 83 batters in 82.2 innings of work this season. He ranked sixth in the ASUN in strikeouts and posted a 9.04 K/9 ratio as one of the Eagles regular weekend rotation arms. In the classroom, Leon owns a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA earning a Masters in Public Administration.

Three teams featured three student-athletes each on the 2018 ASUN Baseball All-Academic Team. Jacksonville, NJIT and Stetson tied for the most student-athletes on the team. Lipscomb, North Florida and USC Upstate each had one selection to round out the 13-person team.

The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the ASUN's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
