MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference awarded the 2016 ASUN Women's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to Detroit's Kylie Birney for the second consecutive season, announced Tuesday by the conference office. Birney is joined by 11 other women's lacrosse student-athletes on the All-Academic Team.
Birney, a senior from Plymouth, Mich., earns her second-straigt ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and her third consecutive selection to the All-Academic team. She holds a 3.99 cumulative GPA and is enrolled in a five-year MBA Business Administration Program at Detroit. She is a three-time co-captain for the Titans and this season became just the fourth player in team history to reach 100 career points. She has netted 24 goals this season on the field helping the Titans reach the ASUN Championship as the No. 4 seed.
She has earned UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll honors and was the President's award winner in her academic career. Playing a more defensive midfield role this season, Birney has tallied 28 ground balls and has caused 13 turnovers on the season.
The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the A-Sun's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
