All-Conference Awards and Honors
MACON, Ga. – The Atlantic Sun Conference unveiled its 2016 Women's Tennis Postseason Awards on Wednesday afternoon, capping off another regular season of A-Sun Tennis.
North Florida's Noemi Hemmerich earned Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Player of the Year honors, while her coach Audra Cohen was named Co-Coach of the Year. FGCU's Joselyn Treyes Albarracin was named the Freshman of the Year for her year's efforts, while Eagle Coach Courtney Vernon also earned the Co-Coach of the Year Award.
Hemmerich was one of the leading factors for the Ospreys' continued dominance of A-Sun Women's Tennis. The junior led the squad at the No. 1 position the majority of the season, posting a 5-1 mark in league action at the top court. Hemmerich boasted an undefeated record at No. 1 doubles with teammate Quetzali Vazquez, and was most recently named the final A-Sun Player of the Week.
Hemmerich was joined by three other UNF players as Michelle Valdez, Luise Intert and Quetzali Vazquez all earned First Team All-Conference selections. Valdez owned a team-best 20 singles victories on the year, and boasted a 5-1 record in both singles and doubles against A-Sun opponents. Intert owned an undefeated record in conference action at the No. 4 spot in singles, going 10-1 overall to lead the league. In addition to her efforts in doubles with Hemmerich, Vazquez was undefeated in conference play singles action at the No. 5 spot, owning 12 singles victories in dual play.
Freshman Treyes Albarracin made an immediate impact for the Eagles, finishing the regular season with an 11-6 overall record in singles play, going 5-1 at the No. 2 position in A-Sun action. Her seven wins overall at the No. 2 spot leads the conference, while the Ecuadorian posted an 8-8 overall record in doubles play.
FGCU's Julia Ascua and Breana Stampfli garned spots on the First Team All-Conference after helping the Eagles to the No. 2 seed at the A-Sun Championship. Ascua finished the season on a hot streak, going 8-2 in her last 10 singles matches, including a 5-1 mark in A-Sun play. Stampfli played in the top singles spot all season for FGCU, posting a 10-8 record and going 5-1 against league foes.
Stetson's Eveline Lepinay was a unanimous choice for the First Team, while Lipscomb's Laura Kent rounded out the squad. Lepinay owned a 14-2 mark this spring, all at the No. 1 singles position. The Quebec native was the two-time A-Sun Player of the Week and won eight consecutive matches between Feb. 13 and March 18. Kent boasted an 11-2 record at No. 3 singles, tops in the league, while going 10-4 at the No. 1 doubles court with Melissa Kromer.
Audra Cohen claims Coach of the Year honors for the third time in her career at North Florida, while FGCU's Courtney Vernon claims the title for the first time. The two combined to win 11 matches in conference play this season.
