JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida advances to its fifth Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championship Final in six years after defeating Lipscomb at the UNF Tennis Complex, 4-0. Singles wins by Esther Zuniga, Michelle Valdez and Marina Cunningham clinched the match for the Ospreys.
The Ospreys got off to a fast start in doubles play with big leads at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Quetzali Vazquez and Marina Cunningham started the scoring for UNF when the duo defeated Hannah Gamage and Danielle Kinnen from Lipscomb, 8-2. Later in doubles play, Luise Intert and Rebeca Pereira bested Jenny Borck and Deahna Welcher by a score of 8-3. With the victory, the Ospreys took a 1-0 lead.
Cunningham helped the Ospreys to a 2-0 lead at No. 5 singles. The UNF senior shutout Jenny Borck, 6-0, 6-0. Right after that score, Esther Zuniga finished off her stellar match at No. 1 singles against Hannah Gamage by a score of 6-0, 6-1.
With one more point left before the Ospreys could clinch a Championship Final berth, Valdez held her own at No. 2 singles versus Deahna Welcher. Valdez claimed the first set, 6-2, and closed out the second set with a 6-1 score. Valdez's singles point clinched the match for the Ospreys and shutout Lipscomb, 4-0.
The Lady Bisons close out their 2015 with an overall record of 13-10, most wins in a season since joining the A-Sun.
North Florida jumps to 16-3 on the year and faces FGCU in the A-Sun Championship Final.
