JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - USC Upstate fought off a tough Northern Kentucky team at the UNF Tennis Complex Friday and won, 4-0, to move on to the Atlantic Sun Men's Tennis Championship Semifinals. USC Upstate advanced with wins by Ramon Simonetti, Jamie Yates and Ignacio Garrido in singles play.

Despite Northern Kentucky coming out strong to start the match, USC Upstate grabbed both doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3. USC Upstate's Felix Ewers and Matt Bennion battled NKU's Jack Carney and Nick Lang at No. 3 doubles to start the day. The Upstate duo slowly pulled away as the match went on and defeated their opposition, 8-4. The Spartans scored their second doubles point when Garrido and Viktor Selander built on their lead late in their doubles match to win over Christopher Angulo and Adrian Isache of NKU on court number two, 8-5.

Garrido rode momentum from doubles play into his singles match against Isache at No. 4 singles. The Second Team All-Conference member took the first set, 6-2, and closed out the match with a 6-1 victory in set number two to give Upstate the 2-0 lead in the match.

Northern Kentucky's Mate Virag held his own against Simonetti at No. 1 singles. Despite dropping the first set, Virag brought the second set to 6-5 and had the momentum. Unfortunately for the Academic All-Conference member, Simonetti went on a streak and claimed the final point and singles match, 7-5.

It was a very similar match between Yates and Jody Maginley at No. 3 singles. Yates had no issues in the first set, winning 6-3. Come the second set, both sides were dead even most of the match. With the match on the line, Yates gained the advantage in the second set and defeated Maginley, 7-5. USC Upstate tallied another point and defeated Northern Kentucky, 4-0.

With the loss, Northern Kentucky falls to 7-13 on the year.

USC Upstate improved its 2015 record to 7-15 and advances to face No. 2 North Florida in the A-Sun Championship semifinals at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
