FGCU Tops All-Conference Team With Four Honorees
MACON, Ga. – Following an undefeated run through the Atlantic Sun Conference men’s soccer regular season, FGCU placed four student-athletes on the All-Atlantic Sun First Team, which included goalkeeper Adam Glick earning the Defensive Player of the Year honor after recording eight shutouts on the year.
Stetson’s Fredrik Brustad received the Player of the Year award, becoming the first player in Stetson men’s soccer history to take the honor. ETSU head coach Scott Calabrese took the Coach of the Year award after guiding the Bucs to the top seed in the A-Sun Championship in only the program’s third year of existence.
Defenders Deion Jones and Matthew O’Shaughnessy joined Glick on the all-conference team as did midfielder Josey Portillo. Jones, a sophomore, led the team in scoring with seven goals and three game winners, while Portillo added 12 points of his own for the Eagles, totaling four goals and four assists. O’Shaughnessy guided the Eagles to the top defense in the A-Sun as FGCU only yielded a 0.61 goals against average, which included only two goals in conference play.
The Hatters, seeded second in the upcoming A-Sun Championship, earned three All-Atlantic Sun First Team honors with Brustad being named to the team for the second-straight season and fellow midfielder Jonathan Mendoza and defender Ryan Corning making the team. Brustad totaled seven goals on the year and added six assists for 20 points to tie for the conference lead, while Mendoza led the conference in assists with 11 and scored three goals of his own. Corning was a mainstay in the defensive backline for Stetson as he accumulated 1492 minutes on the year en route to Stetson recording five shutouts.
Guilherme Reis, Itode Fubara and Aaron Schoenfeld all landed on the A-Sun First Team for ETSU, the host school for the A-Sun Championship next week. Reis, the lone senior for the Bucs, scored three goals on the season – all of which were game-winners – while still manning the defensive end for ETSU. Fubara, who also earned the A-Sun Freshman of the Year award, registered three goals and three assists of the Bucs, while Schoenfeld led the team in scoring with 15 points, ninth in the league, and six goals.
Campbell’s Mitchell Cardenas, Jacksonville’s Nedim Hrustic and Lipscomb’s Garrett Pettis completed the All-Atlantic Sun First Team. Cardenas, a sophomore midfielder, led the Fighting Camels in points with three goals and eight assists en route to Campbell earning the fifth seed in the conference championship. A senior forward for the Dolphins, Hrustic led the league in goals, with ten, and tied for the conference lead in points to guide Jacksonville to the sixth seed. With seven goals and 17 points on the season, Pettis earned his first All-Atlantic Sun First Team selection in this his junior season.
Four freshmen landed on the All-Freshman team by unanimous consent - Fubara, Belmont’s Nico Olsak, FGCU’s Ryan Price and Stetson’s Andreas Schnabl. Four Mercer Bears appeared on the All-Atlantic Sun Second Team in goalkeeper Brett Peticek, defender Josh Shutter, midfielder Ian Cameron and forward Richie Edmondson. The Bears finished the regular season as the third seed going into the A-Sun Championship.
