Lipscomb Comes From Behind to Earn Eighth Straight Battle of the Boulevard Victory

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (lipscombsports.com) – Behind a double-double from freshman Lauren Myrick, the Lipscomb volleyball team took care of crosstown rival Belmont in four sets (25-21, 25-15, 26-24, 25-20) Tuesday night in the Curb Event Center.

The victory is the 300th career win for head coach Brandon Rosenthal, who is in his 17th season at Lipscomb.

Myrick led the Bisons (2-4) attack with a career-high 14 kills and 10 digs to give her a second straight double-double. The outside hitter swung .324 and was one of four players to record double-figure kills.

Sophomore Lanie Wagner also put down 14 kills and a team-high three blocks. Senior middle Maddie Phillips added 13 kills and Garrett Joiner chipped in with 11.

Senior setter Morgan Elmore set the tempo for the Lipscomb with her first double-double of the season behind 45 assists and 11 digs. Alyssa Zwolensky set a new career high with 26 digs to lead the team.

After falling behind nine points midway through the first set, the Bisons were unable to get much going and were forced to call both timeouts before ultimately trailing 21-8. Rosenthal's squad made a run with 13 of the next 15 points, but it was Belmont (1-7) who pulled out the set victory, 25-21.

The next three sets belonged to the Bisons.

In the second frame Lipscomb came out swinging to build a 15-7 advantage and force Belmont to call both timeouts. After trading the next few points, the Bisons got kills from five different players and rolled to a 25-15 win. Maddie Phillips led the charge with six of her 13 kills in the set.

The third set saw Lipscomb get behind six points early before digging its way out of the hole with a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the set at 14-12. With neither team leading by more than two points the rest of the way, the purple and gold recorded the final three tallies to win 26-24.

Tied at 10 midway through the fourth, the Bisons used a 9-3 run to take control at 19-13 after a block and back-to-back kills from Wagner. Facing match point, the Bruins continued to fight and extended the match three straight times before Myrick finished hammered home the match winner.


HERD NOTES

  • The Bisons outhit the Bruins .217 to .175 and had 26 errors in 166 attacks.
  • The four players with double figure kills marked a season high for Lipscomb. Sami Rubal finished with seven.
  • Lipscomb recorded seven blocks to Belmont's six.
  • Ashley Maher added 11 digs from the back row, while Alexis Triplett contributed 10.
  • Wagner led the team with a pair of solo blocks.
  • The six service aces were a season high for the Bisons after totaling four on three occasions.

UP NEXT

The Bisons come home for the first time in 2019 to host their annual LUV Invite. Lipscomb will play Xavier at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and then take on the winner of Louisville and Purdue at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. 

There will also be 3 p.m. games each day prior to Lipscomb's match.
