NASHVILLE, Tenn. - No. 4 FGCU defeated No. 5 Liberty, 2-1, in the 2018 ASUN Conference Women's Soccer Championship Quarterfinal hosted at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The Eagles now set their sights on top-seeded team and ASUN Regular Season Champions, Lipscomb, on Sunday afternoon.
Evdokia Popadinova scored in the 28th minute off of an assist from Marjorie Boilesen. It marked Popadinova's league-leading 14th goal of the season and Boilesen's ninth assist, which moved into a tie for most in the ASUN. The Flames managed to keep the game close despite being outshot by FGCU 10-4 throughout the contest. Five of FGCU's shots were on frame compared to three for the Flames.
The Eagles struck again in the 58th minute with Cassidy Morgan finding the back of the net off a header that was assisted by Camille Knudstrup. Morgan's goal ended up being the deciding score as she netted her third of the season. Liberty's Gabrielle Farrell came close to scoring for the Flames when her shot hit the goal post in the 73rd minute. Cora Duininck would put the Flames on the board in the 83rd minute, but Liberty was unable to even the contest late in the game.
FGCU advance to face the host and No. 1 seed Lipscomb Bisons on Sunday at 1 PM CT. The Bisons and Eagles last played on September 30th when the Bisons defeated the Eagles, 1-0, in Fort Myers.
No. 4 FGCU vs. No. 5 Liberty Quarterfinal Notes
- FGCU took part in its first ASUN Championship Quarterfinal contest as the Eagles earned byes in their previous seven appearances.
