KENT, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team (1-10) rang the victory bell on Friday as it earned its first win in program history and first win at Dix Stadium with a 21-6 victory over Delaware State (1-5).
Eight Golden Flashes scored in the game as Brianne Tierney secured her first win at Kent State and her first win as a Division-I head coach.
"This win is our first ever and well-earned by a young but tenacious group," said Tierney. "I am thrilled that they had the first of many under their belts, and I look forward to building on this success. We are going to focus back on executing our details and look forward to competing again on Sunday."
The Flashes shot out of the gates, jumping to a quick 3-0 lead behind goals from Graceyn Dean, Megan Kozarand Abby Jones. The two teams traded goals before Kent State went on a 14-0 run over the next 30 minutes of action.
Jones led the way for the Flashes, scoring a career-high five goals and tallying one assist. Her 32 total points (21g, 11a) lead the Flashes on the season. Kelli Bailey (4g, 2a), Graceyn Dean (4g) and Lluna Katz (4g) all recorded career-highs in goals for the Flashes.
Megan Kozar, Katie Stachler and Meghan Cawood all scored goals for the Flashes while Emily Speckmantallied her first career goal in the second half. Eva Nikolai led the Flashes with five ground balls, four caused turnovers and two assists.
Grace Merrill (1-10) earned her first victory of the season in goal, saving two shots and allowing just three goals in 38 minutes.
The Golden Flashes will look for a second straight win as they take on Howard on Sunday, March 31 at 1 p.m. Kent State will then head to Florida for a two-game ASUN Conference road trip against Stetson on April 5 and Jacksonville on April 7.
