Coastal Carolina Lacrosse Opens 2019 with Win over ODU

CONWAY,S.C – Coastal Carolina's Haley Alexander tallied eight points to pace the Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team in the 19-10 season-opening victory over Old Dominion inside Brooks Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Chanticleers start 1-0 on the season while ODU falls to 0-1.
Alexander scored three (24:51, 20:53, 19:07) of the first four goals for the Chanticleers, two of which were assisted by Samantha Courtemanche, to give Coastal a 4-1 lead. Fellow senior Madeline Bromley scored a hat-trick (21:31, 6:48, and 0:46) in the first half with her first score sandwiched between the first two goals by Alexander.
Newcomer Avery Drouin scored her first career Chanticleer goal with 18:41 remaining on the clock in the first half to push Coastal's lead to 5-1 after weaving through the Monarchs defense.
ODU would make it 8-3 after getting free position goals from Glory Johnson (15:29) and Lilly Siskind (10:14) to cut into the Coastal lead.
Haley Kyger (12:55), Jordan Harrell (1:59), and Lyla Robinson (0:21) closed out the scoring for Coastal to give the home team a 10-3 halftime lead.
Courtemanche tallied the eventual game-winning goal when she found the back of the net with 28:04 remaining in regulation for the 11-3 lead. Alexander followed up with her fourth goal to push the lead to 12-3 with 26:31 remaining on the game clock.
The Monarch's Johnson picked up three (24:56, 19:24, and 5:53) of ODU's seven second-half goals to lead the ODU offense with four points on four goals for the match.
The second half saw three first-year Chanticleers score their first career goals in Hannah Close (23:06), Sydney Fox(9:01) and Carlie Doughty (3:43). Doughty's first goal was assisted by fellow freshman Megan Bozzi for the final Chanticleer goal on the afternoon.
For the match, Coastal outshot ODU 31-25 while holding advantages in ground balls 21-12, draw controls 17-9 and saves.
Coastal Carolina will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 18 as the team will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. to take on Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Syracuse.
