ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- North Florida's Mindy Herrick and Stetson's Sarah May both earned spots in next month's U.S. Women's Amateur. The duo qualified after participating in the qualifier event held at Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla.
Herrick fired a 3-under par 69 to finish tied for third in the qualifier. A native of Gainesville, Fla., she becomes the first golfer in North Florida women's golf program history to advance to the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. During her career at UNF, Herrick has been named second-team All-ASUN as a sophomore while also earning All-Freshman and ASUN All-Tournament accolades. She played in all 10 events for the Ospreys last season, posting a stroke average of 74.62 and collecting four finishes in the Top 10 highlighted by a co-medalist finish at the Amelia Island Collegiate.
May, a native of Fleming Island, Fla., earned the final qualifying spot as she placed sixth with an even-par 72. A rising junior, May was second on the Hatters with a 76.07 stroke average this season, producing a top-five finish at the LadyCat Invitational in March where she also carded a season and team-low round of 67. At the ASUN Championship, May finished in a tie for 17th place with a 54-hole score of 244 (83-75-86).
The 119th U.S. Women's Amateur will be played Aug. 7-10 at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss.
