Jacksonville, Kennesaw State Claim Opening Victories on Wednesday Night

ATLANTA, Ga. - Jacksonville and Kennesaw State each grabbed home wins to open its season on the second night of the ASUN Conference Women's Basketball season. Each battling NAIA members, the two squads won in different fashions, having each game ultimately decided by 10 or more points.

Kennesaw State 80, Middle Georgia State 70

Kennesaw State opened the night with an 80-70 home victory over Middle Georgia State. Jumping out to an early advantage, the Owls were able to lead by as much as 16 points in the game but that occurred in the first quarter as the Knights continued to fight and trim the deficit to as little as five in the third quarter. But the defense for KSU made the difference, forcing 29 turnovers and turning that into 35 points off turnovers. 2017 ASUN Freshman of the Year Carlotta Gianolla led the team with 24 points, also pulling down nine rebounds while Alexis Poole notched the double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Owls return to the court on Sunday as they met Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J.

Jacksonville continued the winning ways of the night, taking down Webber International by a final score of 73-39 inside Swisher Gymnasium. Preseason All-Conference honoree Jasmyn Brown topped the scoring output with 20 on the night, including four three-pointers made on seven attempts. Overall the Dolphins shot just under 42 percent and outrebounded the Warriors by a 50-28 margin. Guard Rolanda Hayes paced the squad with 10 boards of her own, one of four players to tally at least seven. Just the second season-opening win for JU since 2010-11, the team hopes to remain undefeated as it meets #20 Texas A&M in College Station on Sunday.
