Lipscomb Knocks off No. 14 Ole Miss to Highlight Friday #ASUNSB Action

LakePoint, Ga. - Opening weekend in ASUN Softball continued Friday with five teams in action. The day began with two Lipscomb victories, including a win over No. 14 Ole Miss. 

Lipscomb swept their competition opening up the season 2-0. The Bisons first faced off against Georgia Tech with both pitchers showing great effort as Mandy Jordan went for 17 strikeouts and only allowed two hits. Lipscomb went into extra innings where Khayla Green brought in the Bisons game-winning run. The day didn't end there, as Lipscomb took down No. 14 Ole Miss in its second match of the day. This time newcomer, Jordan Fortel led the Bisons to a no-hitter, allowing one walk and striking out four batters. The last time the Lady  The Bisons will play another doubleheader tomorrow at the Sand Dollar Classic. They are set to take on Florida A&M at 10 in the morning, followed by a no one matchup with Lamar.

Stetson racked up an 8-0 win in its first game of the day against Akron. The Hatters defeated the Zips in five innings that featured freshman Kasey Fava's debut in the circle. Fava had six strikeouts and allowed only one hit and at bat she grabbed two hits and one stolen base. Ashly Smith also made an impact, leading the team with three hits, two runs and one stolen base. Stetson's win marked head coach's Frank Griffin's 700th win at the helm for the Hatters.  

North Florida takes home its first win of the season over Illinois, defeating the Chiefs 5-3. ASUN Preseason Player of the Year, Navia Penrod led the Ospreys with three hits, one run alongside Kayla McGory who scored two runs. 

Jacksonville also posted an extra innings win against Connecticut for its first win of the season. Danielle Baker singled to first base with a bunt and Allie McCourt brought home the Dolphins' victory off the bat. The Dolphins won their second game as well against Jacksonville State 8-6.

FGCU closed out the night downing NC State 7-2.
