LYNCHBURG, Va. - Liberty senior Azaria Kirwa has earned a spot on the men's 10K starting line at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, it was announced Saturday afternoon.
By virtue of his seventh-place finish in Friday's NCAA Division I Southeast Regional Championships, Kirwa was one of 38 men's individuals invited to the national meet. Those runners will join 31 men's teams at the 2018 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, next Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis.
The men's 10K, which will begin at 12:45 p.m. Eastern, will mark Kirwa's second straight appearance at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The native of Eldoret, Kenya earned All-America honors with a 25th-place finish last season in Louisville, Ky.
Kirwa's successful senior season has featured four individual victories in six races, headlined by triumphs at the ASUN Cross Country Championships and the Iona College Meet of Champions. He swept the ASUN Men's Runner of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, while being named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on Sept. 17.
Kirwa was one of six men's individuals from the Southeast Region selected for qualification to Madison. He will join regional foes Peter Seufer (Virginia Tech), Aaron Templeton (Furman), Amon Kemboi (Campbell), Lawrence Kipkoech (Campbell) and Brent Demarest (Virginia) at the national meet.
