Men's #ASUNTF Stands Off With ACC & SEC Opponents

LakePoint, Ga. - ASUN Track and Field will face multiple power-five conference opponents this weekend, spreading out its five men's squads over four events. Lipscomb and Kennesaw State will both attend the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., while the Bisons expend additional athletes for the Georgia Tech Invitational. USC Upstate will join Lipscomb in Atlanta, while North Florida heads to the No. 17 South Carolina-hosted USC Open. Meanwhile, NJIT heads back to East Stroudburg, Pa. for the All-American Invitational.

KSU's Dayo Akindele and Lipscomb's Wayne Newman have been two of the top performers for the ASUN this season, and are the only two conference athletes holding top-25 markers in the NCAA East. Akindele and Newman are two of the top short distance hurdlers in the country, while the former's leap in the long jump earlier this year (7.67m) is 20th in Division I Track and Field.

- Dayo Akindele took first at last year's Virginia Challenge triple jump with a leap of 15.32m. He leads the ASUN in 2017 with a mark of 15.24m at Florida Relays
- Kennesaw State owns the top conference performance for nine different events, while four athletes have tallied performances ranking in the top-50 of the NCAA East
- Three KSU athletes finished first among collegiates in events at the UNF Invite two weeks ago, with Fabeon Tucker tossing a distance of 49.74m in the javelin during his college debut in the event

- Three Lipscomb men competed at last year's Virginia Challenge, with Jacob Poyner running a 14:42.58 in the 5000m. He ran his season-best in the event just last week at the Mt. SAC Relays (14:20.48)
- Wayne Newman owns the top ASUN times in both the 110m hurdles (13.99) and the 400m hurdles (52.49) this year. His best tally at the 2016 Georgia Tech Invitational was a 14.17 in the 110m
- Juan Gonzalez earned ASUN Track Athlete of the Week Honors after setting a program record in the 5000m the previous weekend, posting a time of 14:14.64

- NJIT owns three of the top-five javelin markers in the ASUN this year, while Erick McNamara's 53.32m leads the conference by over 3.5 meters
- The last time the Highlanders competed in East Stroudsburg, Michael Haraka broke an NJIT freshman record with a hammer throw of 41.37m. His top throw this year is 44.86m
- Issa Feknous took first in the METS Outdoor Championship decathlon, tallying a season-high for the Highlanders with 5406 points overall

- North Florida owns the top ASUN performance in six events for the 2017 outdoor season. Fynn Timm's 3000m steeplechase time (9:05.68) leads all other conference athletes by nearly 19 seconds
- Two Ospreys finished first in the UNF Invite two weekend's ago, while the team's 4x400m combination of George Escobar, Chris Robin, Cristian Acuna and Desmond Robb ran the fastest time of the ASUN season, at 3:16.74
- North Florida's DMR squad of Tyler Stahl, Desmond Robb, Rayford James and Brad Hort set a new program record earlier this year with a mark of 9:57.28, on the way to taking UNF's first-ever first place finish at Florida Relays

- USC Upstate's Tanner Saunders ran a 52.85 in the Raleigh Relays 400m hurdles, giving the sophomore the third best time in the ASUN and 37th best in the NCAA East
- Patrick Jamison ran to third place at the Charlotte Invitational last week, posting a time of 21.86 in the 200m dash. Jamison's time is third-best in the ASUN this season, while his 10.87 in the High Point VertKlasse Meeting 100m is fourth in the conference
- Jaquille Mosley leads the Spartans in the field, holding the team's top distances in both the shot put (11.89m) and javelin (43.82m)
