ATLANTA, Ga. - Kennesaw State, Liberty & Lipscomb took to the Liberty Kickoff meet on Friday and Saturday in a preview of the 2019 ASUN Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship. The three conference squads combined for nine event victories and a multitude of event & program records.
Liberty posted five event victories at their home meet with Alejandro Zapata collecting two of his own coming in the 200 & 500-meter dashes. His times of 21.17 & 1:01.35 both set the program records in the events, while his 500m time sits as the fastest time in the world this year. Jose Ballivian took first place in the shot put as his top throw of 58'6.5 bested the field by over three feet. Michael Todd crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run as his time of 1:52.57 bested two-time defending ASUN Champ, Ryan Speer, by 0.23 seconds. The Flames' 4x400-meter relay squad posted a time of 3:11.39, which currently ranks 32nd in the nation.
Kennesaw State left Lynchburg with two event wins on the men's side behind the efforts of Chuck McConville and Chase Kennedy. In the weight throw, McConville registered a top toss of 17.39m (57'0) on his second throw to best the field of attached competitors. Kennedy clocked a time of 8:41.80 in the 3,000-meter run, nearly two seconds ahead of Lipscomb's Silas Griffith. Other Owls registered the top performances by ASUN competitors at the meet including; Cameron Bolden (60m; 6.95), DJ Akindele (60H; 8.17), Tariq Bradford (TJ; 14.78m).
Lipscomb collected meet victories in the 1,000-meter run and the 4x800m Relay while adding several top-five finishes in their second meet of the season. Jonathan Schwind earned the 1,000m title with his time of 2:26.19, setting a personal record and finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the field. He joined Zach Israel, Ryan Bush and Ryan Speer in winning the 4x800m relay with a time of 7:40.57 to set the facility and meet record. Demontae Wilson produced the top ASUN performance in the 400-meter dash in 50.11.
