NASHVILLE, TENN. - No.1 Lipscomb defeated No. 6 Stetson 2-0 at home to claim its second-straight ASUN Conference Men's Soccer Championship. The Bisons also earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Logan Paynter was the source of offensive power for the Bisons, scoring both goals in the victory. The 2018 ASUN Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Paynter set the Bisons' all-time scoring record in the win, netting his 34th and 35th career goals to provide the offense. The first half was slow to start as both teams felt out the rhythm of the contest, putting up just a few shots between either side in the first half of the beginning stanza. The game broke open on Paynter's first goal in the 40th minute as he headed in a ball after it was chipped in from Noah Gulden.
Coming out of halftime with a 1-0 lead, the scoring did not take as long to occur in the final 45 minutes as Paynter notched his second of the night in the 54th minute. From there on, the defense was the headline as the Bisons shut down Stetson to the tune of three shots in the second half and just five overall on the night. Chris Zappia recorded the shutout, his second of the year after making two saves of the five shots Stetson took.
With the victory, the Bisons now await their fate for the NCAA College Cup which will be announced on NCAA.com Monday, November 12 at Noon CT. The Bisons then find out who and where they meet for the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
