NASHVILLE, TENN. - No. 1 Lipscomb topped No. 4 Jacksonville in the ASUN Conference Men's Soccer Championship Semifinal, advancing to the Final for the second-straight season. With the 2-1 decision, Lipscomb now awaits the winner of FGCU and Stetson as the Final will be played in Nashville next Saturday, November 10.
The Bisons opened the scoring in the first half with a long shot outside the box that rolled into the far side of the net for Ben Locke. Just moments later though, Jacksonville found the equalizer after a ball trickled past the Lipscomb keeper and Reed Davis was able to corral it into the back of the net. The score held that way for the last 30 minutes of the opening stanza after each team had chances but were stymied by strong defense in the box.
The second half continued with back-and-forth play with no scoring until a misplay by John Levy of Jacksonville led to Zarek Jakubowski of Lipscomb to gather the ball and send it right into the open net. With 20 minutes to go, the Bisons intensified their pressure and tried to mount another score before the Dolphins could equalize. Jacksonville nearly grabbed the even score with a header but it went off the bar and back into the open field to be cleared by Lipscomb defenders. The final few drives fell short for JU and allowed Lipscomb to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
With the victory, Lipscomb advances to the ASUN Championship Final which will be held in Nashville, Tenn. on November 10. The Bisons await the winner of Stetson and FGCU which was in a lightning delay at the conclusion of the second semifinal. More information on that match will be posted at the conclusion of the game.
