NJIT continued its hot start to the 2017 season with a convincing 3-0 home victory against St. Francis Brooklyn. Senior striker Mamadou Guirassy continued his brilliant form with two more goals to bring his season tally to eight, the most in NCAA Division I men's soccer. He assisted on Danny Cordeiro's second goal of the season as well. Victor Pujades continued his excellent form in goal as he earned his fifth shutout of the season, which also ranks tops in Division I. It took 34 minutes for the Highlanders to strike, but Guirassy gave them the lead after Pablo Jimenez found the striker on the left side of the goal and Guirassy finished for the 1-0 lead. The senior from Paris, France turned provider as Cordeiro increased the NJIT lead in the 54th minute. Cordeiro finished a rebound after Guirassy's shot could only be parried by the St. Francis Brooklyn goalie. Nine minutes later, Guirassy rounded out the scoring after Thomas Rodan fed Guirassy up top, who beat a defender and then the keeper for the 3-0 final scoreline.
USC Upstate snapped a nine-game losing streak to its cross-town rival Wofford with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night. Lukas Sommer scored the game-winning goal off a penalty kick in the 84th minute. Sommer was instrumental on the other end as well as he stopped Wofford's last scoring attempt with 15 seconds to go in the match on the goalline. After goalie Brady Moody had the ball stripped from him near the endline outside of the box, Sommer raced to guard the goal and stopped the Wofford shot on the empty net with his knees, the ball ricochet to Moody and the Spartans held on for the 2-1 victory. JR Cozine had put the Spartans on top in the 51st minute, finishing off a great team move that saw Anson Giron lay a Cam Philpot cross into the path of Cozine who converted. Nine minutes later, Wofford scored the equalizer off a set piece. Philpot was taken down on a breakaway in the box and Sommer converted the penalty kick. USC Upstate has won two-straight games now and takes on Winthrop next.
Logan Paynter scored the golden goal game-winner in the 97th minute to give Lipscomb its first-ever win against Georgia State. The Bisons defeated a Panthers team that only four days ago took down No. 2 Wake Forest. In a very tightly contested matchup, both teams were unable to create many clear cut chances. Christopher Zappia made a couple of key stops as he earned the shutout. In the end he was credited with five saves, while Georgia State's keeper made four. The game went into overtime and in the 97th minute, Ivan Alvarado took a shot from the top of the box towards the right side of the goal. The goalie paried the ball right into the path of the onrushing Paynter who slotted home the golden goal and cued wild celebrations on the pitch. Today's victories marks the first in program history for Lipscomb against Georgia State, who won all nine previous meetings against the Bisons.
