FLORENCE, Ala. (roarlions.com) – Mervin James scored a career-high 20 points to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 73-50 home win over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday afternoon. With the win, UNA improves to 3-4 on the season, including a 3-0 mark at Flowers Hall.
James, a freshman from Mabelton, Ga., was 8-for-8 from the floor, including a three-point basket. He added 10 rebounds on the day to complete his first career double-double.
North Alabama broke the game open in the closing minutes of the first half. The Delta Devils took a 22-20 lead with 6:50 remaining, but would not score again. A tip-in by James tied the game at 22-22 and the Lions closed the half on a 15-0 run. James had eight points during the stretch, including a runner with five seconds remaining to give UNA a 35-22 lead at the break.
In the second half, the lead only grew. The Lions led 50-35 at the 8:54 mark before taking control with an 11-0 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by Christian Agnew pushed the lead to 61-35 with 7:17 remaining. MVSU would not get within 20 points the rest of the way.
For the game, 12 different players scored for the Lions. Agnew also reached double figures on the day with 10 points. Mississippi Valley State (0-7) was led by Michael Green's game-high 21 points.
UNA will host Morehead State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. at Flowers Hall.
