Mathews & James Earn Player of Week; Davis Collects Newcomer Honors

ATLANTA, Ga. - Liberty's Scottie James and Lipscomb's Garrison Mathews shared this week's ASUN Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Tyreese Davis of Jacksonville continued his strong freshman campaign to earn Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. 

Mathews extends his conference record with his 10th ASUN Player of the Week honor after guiding the Bisons to a 2-0 mark in league play. The senior averaged 22.5 PPG last week as the Bisons defeated North Florida and Stetson at home. In the game against the Ospreys, Mathews scored 25 points and added seven rebounds. He made 5-of-9 from behind the arc in that game, and continued his hot shooting into the game against the Hatters. He was 6-of-10 from the field that contest and put up 20 points in just 23 minutes of action. During the match, Mathews became just the ninth player in ASUN history to surpass the 2,000 career point mark. He also set school records for most points in the D-I era and most three-pointers made. 

James collects his first career ASUN Player of the Week honor after another dominant week for the Flames. The forward averaged 16.5 PPG and 7.0 RPG to help Liberty maintain a perfect record in ASUN play. He shot 7-of-10 from the field and finished with 15 points in a road victory at Stetson to open the week. James then followed that up with 18 points and nine boards as Liberty defeated Jacksonville 69-53 in its first-ever ASUN contest at home. For the week, the junior shot 14-of-21 from the field and added two assists and two blocks combined. 

For the second time this season, freshman guard Tyreese Davis earns the ASUN Newcomer of the Week honor. Davis had a breakout performance to open the week, when he set new career-highs in points and rebounds in a victory at Kennesaw State. He shot 8-of-10 from the field and scored 19 points, while adding 12 rebounds in an impressive 90-70 road victory for the Dolphins. The Kansas City, Mo. native then followed that up with nine points and three assists as the Dolphins played at Liberty to close out the week. For the week, Davis averaged 14.5 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 4.5 APG as he continues to play a big role for the Dolphins in his freshman season.

- Added two blocks and two assists as Liberty sits tied for first in the ASUN with a 3-0 record in league play

- Became just the ninth player in league history to surpass the 2,000 career point mark during Saturday's victory
- Averaged 6.5 RPG and 2.0 APG for the week as Lipscomb sits tied atop the standings at 3-0 in ASUN play
