ATLANTA, Ga. - Liberty and Lipscomb moved into a tie for first place in the ASUN Men's Basketball standings as both sides earned victories on Wednesday night. Jacksonville collected its first conference win with an impressive road victory as well.
Jacksonville showcased a dominant performance as the Dolphins routed Kennesaw State 90-70 behind marquee efforts from JD Notae & Tyreese Davis. Notae became the first league player this season to throwdown a triple-double as the sophomore recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Davis chipped in a team-high 19 points, 12 boards, six assists and three steals. Two other Dolphins added double-figure scoring with Jace Hogan (16) & David Bell (13). For KSU, Tyler Hooker registered a game-high 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting as Kosta Jankovic tallied 17 points off the bench.
For the just the third time in program history, Liberty moved to 2-0 in conference play, as they took down Stetson, 71-53, in DeLand. The Flames stout defense was on full display, as they held the Hatters to just 17 points and 23 percent in the first half. Scottie James led a balanced scoring attack for Liberty. The junior forward poured in 15 points, five rebounds and shot 70 percent from the field. Ten of the 11 players that appeared in the contest for Liberty recorded at least one basket, with five players scoring at least seven points. Christiaan Jones led the Hatters with 12 points. Both squads are back in action on Saturday when Liberty hosts Jacksonville, while Stetson pays a visit to Lipscomb.
Garrison Mathews and Eli Pepper combined for 45 points in Lipscomb's 81-66 win vs. North Florida to improve the Bisons to 2-0 in league play; tied with Liberty for first place. Pepper secured a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as the senior also set the Lipscomb NCAA Division I career rebounding record passing former Bisons great Adnan Hodzic. Mathews finished with 25 points including five triples as Lipscomb made 12 shots from deep. All five starters for UNF reached double figure scoring with four equaling a team-high with 12 points on the night.
