FGCU's Goodwin Selected To Prestigious Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – On Monday, officials from the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament finalized the players who will compete in this year's event, and FGCU's Brandon Goodwin is one of the select few who will participate in the four-day tournament with the opportunity to showcase his skill set and increase his professional stock.

Goodwin will join 63 other college seniors at the PIT, which is recognized by NBA and international scouts as a showcase for future professional players. Representatives from every NBA team attend the event as the players are broken into eight teams and play in a 12-game tournament Apr. 11-14.

"I'm really excited for a great opportunity for Brandon, and I hope that he plays well to put himself in a great position for his professional playing career," said recently-announced FGCU head men's basketball coach Michael Fly. "I also hope that he plays well so that it can show our current and future players that hard work and dedication can lead to terrific professional opportunities."

Action for Goodwin, who is a member of Team 1, gets underway on Wednesday at 7 p.m. All games will be streamed online via Netcast Sports, and the complete tournament schedule and video links can be accessed by visiting www.netcastsports.com/schedule.

The PIT – which will be entering its 66th year in 2018 – is the only postseason camp conducted for college seniors prior to the NBA Pre-Draft Camp. While the tournament is traditionally reserved for projected non-First Round NBA Draft picks, alumni of the PIT include five of the 50 greatest players in NBA history: Rick Barry, Earl 'The Pearl' Monroe, John Stockton, Scottie Pippen and Dave Cowens.

Goodwin is joined on Team 1 by the following players:

Thomas Welsh, UCLA
Justin Tillman, VCU
Kyle Washington, Cincinnati
Peyton Aldridge, Davidson
Justin Bibbs, Virginia Tech
Marcus Foster, Creighton
Manu Lecomte, Baylor

All games are played at Churchland High School in Portsmouth. Additional information can be accessed by visiting www.PortsmouthInvitational.com.

The PIT adds another heralded honor to the redshirt senior guard's tremendous 2017-18 season. He joins Brett Comer in 2015 as the only FGCU products to ever be invited to Portsmouth.

Late last month, Goodwin was named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press, joining Sherwood Brown in 2013 as the only FGCU men's basketball players to garner the award.

A UCF transfer, Goodwin dominated the ASUN Conference and led the Eagles since becoming eligible for his junior season in 2016-17. He was named the unanimous ASUN Newcomer of the Year last season, and followed it up in 2017-18 by becoming just the second FGCU product to be named ASUN Player of the Year, once again joining Brown in 2013. Additionally, The Norcross High School product became the first player in program history to be named a two-time NABC District 3 First Team selection.

The 6-2 Goodwin led FGCU in points (18.6), rebounds (5.5) and assists (4.8) – one of only eight players nationally who paced his team in all three categories. He ranked 2nd in the ASUN in scoring, 3rd in assists, 9th in steals (1.4) and 12th in rebounding – the only player in the league to rank in the top 12 in all four categories.

With 632 points in 34 games, the Norcross, Ga., native surpassed his own single-season program record of 629 points established last year in the same amount of contests. He also broke his own single-season D-I program record for free throws made (144; previous: 136 last year).

In league games, the two-time ASUN Player of the Week this year ranked 4th in scoring (19.6), 4th in steals (1.7), 5th in assists (4.6) and 8th in rebounding (6.1) – once again the only player to rank in the top 10 in all four categories. Goodwin, who had four double-doubles on the year, also ranked 8th in ASUN games in field-goal percentage (.538), and finished the regular season by posting scoring performances of 28, 28 and 27 points. He delivered a then Division-I program record 34-point performance in the ASUN Tournament Final – a total surpassed in the same game by Zach Johnson (Miami, Fla./Norland HS).

Despite playing just two years with FGCU, Goodwin's name is plastered all over the program's all-time record book, including: points (7th, 1,261), assists (5th, 301), field goals made (8th, 442), field-goal percentage (7th, .490) and free throws made (3rd, 280).

Additionally, Goodwin was selected to participate in the inaugural 3X3U National Championship during Final Four Weekend in San Antonio, helping the ASUN Team to a 2-1 record. The event pitted 32 four-man teams consisting of players from every D-I basketball conference against each other in a three-day, 3-on-3 tournament.
