Eagles Defeat Missouri Valley Champs Behind Johnson's 27 Points

LakePoint, Ga. - FGCU became the third ASUN Conference Men's Basketball squad to start the season 1-0 with a decisive victory against Illinois State on Saturday in Alico Arena.

FGCU opened their 2017-18 season with a major non-conference victory defeating Illinois State, 98-87, in Alico Arena. The Red Birds won the Missouri Valley Regular Season title last season and advanced to the NIT Second Round. The Eagles outscored ISU in both halves, which included a 53-point second half for FGCU. Zach Johnson led FGCU in scoring with 27 points as the junior guard knocked down three trifectas and finished 8-of-9 on free throws. Brandon Goodwin posted a complete game with 21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Three other Eagles finished in double-figure scoring; Christian Terrell (13), Christian Carlyle (11) and Dinero Mercuius (11).

North Florida battled with its second-straight Big Ten Conference foe in as many nights as the Ospreys fell to Michigan, 86-66. UNF held the advantage late into the first half before the Wolverines claimed a 32-30 lead at the break. Another run gave UNF control of the scoreboard in the second half before a late surge from the Wolverines became the deciding factor. Garrett Sams posted a team-high 17 points, while J.T. Escobar and Ivan Gandia-Rosa combined for 22 points in the loss. The Ospreys take on VCU on Monday in Richmond, Va.

In the debut of their brand new arena the NJIT Wellness and Events Center, the Highlanders fell to Wagner, 60-49, depsite a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds from Abdul Lewis. Anthony Tarke led the Highlanders in scoring with 13, but the Highlanders left several points at the charity stripe finishing 15-of-30. NJIT returns to the WEC on Tuesday against Lafayette.
