LakePoint, Ga. - Behind Darius Dawkins' record setting night, Jacksonville extended the ASUN Conference Men's Basketball win streak to ten victories as the senior forward broke the conference's all-time single-game record for made three-pointers with 13 tonight. The Dolphins routed Middle Georgia State 124-85 in the final tune-up before league play.
Dawkins' 41 points are the most scored by any ASUN player this season, and second most in the past 10 seasons in the league. His 13 made three-pointers also broke the program's all-time record, while marking the most by any player in the NCAA this season, and tied for fifth most in NCAA Division I Men's Basketball history. The previous Dolphins program record stood at 10, while the ASUN record was 11, last achieved in 2012 by UNF's Parker Smith.
Jacksonville also set a program record with 21 made three-pointers as a team, the most by any ASUN team in the past 10 years. The game was close until the eight-minute mark of the first half, when the Dolphins exploded for a 15-3 run to blow the game open. Behind Dawkins' six triples, Jacksonville took a 55-35 lead into the break.
The Dolphins started the second half with a bang as Antwon Clayton threw down a monster dunk to extend the Dolphin lead before Dawkins came off the bench to provide another spark. Dawkins was a perfect 7-for-7 from the three-point line in the second half as he surpassed the program and conference single game records. Tanner Rubio joined the three-point barrage with five made threes in the second half as Jacksonville continued to extend its lead.
The 124 total points scored are the most by any ASUN team in the last 10 years and rank tied for seventh-most in Jacksonville Men's Basketball history. The last time the Dolphins scored 124 points in a single game was 1971. The 21 made three-pointers as a team tonight are tied for the third-most in the NCAA this season.
Jacksonville now has its sights set on this weekend's River City Rumble when the Dolphins welcome cross town rival North Florida for the first game of the ASUN Conference season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN3.
