LakePoint, Ga. - Three ASUN Conference Men's Basketball sides collected season opening wins on Friday as six teams took to court. NJIT walloped Sarah Lawrence, while Lipscomb opened the day with a decisive victory. Stetson improved to 1-0 as four players reached double-figure scoring.
Five Bisons tallied double figures in points as Lipscomb easily defeated Sewanee to start 1-0 for the third-straight season. Western Kentucky transfer, Rob Marberry's 22 points were most for Lipscomb as he added eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action. Preseason All-Conference selection, Josh Williams returned from injury to tally 14 points and six boards just ahead of Aaron Korn (13), Nathan Moran (12) and George Brammeier (10). Michael Buckland pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Damon Lynn set the NJIT Division I career scoring record in the Highlanders' 100-38 victory against Sarah Lawrence to begin the season as the senior guard finished with a game-high 14 points with four three's made. All 13 players who walked onto the court scored for NJIT including 13 from Anthony Tarker and 12 by Tim Coleman. Tarker added 10 rebounds for his first double-double.
Led by Angel Rivera's game-high 18 points, Stetson defeated Webber International, 78-62, as the Hatters outscored the Warriors by 16 in the second half. Rivera finish 5-of-7 form the floor with two three-pointers, while dishing out three assists. Three other Hatters finished in double figures including Divine Myles (14), Derick Newton (12) and Brian Pegg (11). Myles added to his stat line with five assists, three steals and three rebounds. Newton grabbed a team-high seven boards.
North Florida outscored Auburn in the second half, 36-34, but couldn't overcome a 19-point halftime deficit in their opening night loss. In his return to the court, Romelo Banks poured in 16 points with 10 rebounds, while Garrett Sams added 11 points off the bench.
FGCU led Florida at the 14-minute mark of the second half, but a long spurt by the Gators took control of the contest as the Eagles fell 80-59. In his FGCU debut, Brandon Goodwin totaled 14 points, while Rayjon Tucker tallied 10 as the only Eagles to finish in double-digit scoring. Demetris Morant grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Nick Masterson posted a career-high in scoring as Kennesaw State dropped its season opener to Iowa, 91-74. Masterson finished with 29 points as he connected on seven triples and 11-of-16 from the field. The Owls outscored the Hawkeyes in the second half, 49-48. Kendrick Ray added 12 points, while Kyle Clarke dished out six assists.
