DELAND, Fla. - In an instant classic for ASUN Conference Baseball, No. 6 Stetson topped No. 3 Lipscomb 6-5 in 12 innings to improve to 2-0 in the conference Championship and move on to day three in the winner's bracket. The contest marked the second-straight extra-inning game for Lipscomb and the first time with two games that required extra time since 2016.
Leading 4-0 in the ninth inning, Stetson saw their lead squandered as Lipscomb pushed four runs across home plate to keep their season alive. After cutting the lead in half, Lipscomb tied the game on a two-run single from Haddon Adams who went 3-7 with a double in the contest. Lipscomb was able to get to Stetson closer Vlad Nunez who entered the day leading the ASUN with 13 saves this year.
The 10th inning featured more dramatics as sophomore first baseman Eric Foggo produced a go-ahead sac fly for the Hatters to bring the score to 5-4 with the game looking to be shut down on its second opportunity. Again though, Lipscomb came through with the tying run, this time an RBI base knock from pinch hitter Jarrett O'Leary into center field that drove the tying run across. Reliever Robbie Knox got a chance to come to the plate in the bottom of the 10th with the winning run just 90 feet away, but went down looking at strike three in his first plate appearance of 2019 and second of his career.
Knox stayed in the game into the 12th inning when Foggo came up with his third go-ahead RBI of the contest, an infield single that he beat out with two outs in the inning to drive in the sixth and final run of the game for Stetson. Freshman reliever Michael Bacica had entered the game in the 11th and was now charged with finishing the game. The Florida native allowed two runners via walks, but struck out the side with two looking and the final hitter, Adams, swinging through the final pitch of the afternoon to give Stetson a momentous victory in front of the home crowd.
With the win, Stetson now awaits the winner of Liberty and Jacksonville which is to be played tomorrow at 11 AM ET on ESPN+. Lipscomb's season ends with a record of 30-25 and 14-10 in conference play to earn the third seed in the postseason.
