Five-Run Second Inning Lifts KSU Over UMass To Clinch The Series

 

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State offense carried its momentum into game two against UMASS and exploded for 12 runs in the 12-2 win on Saturday (March 16) afternoon.

The Owls posted their highest run total in an inning of the 2019 season in the second frame against the Minutemen. After back-to-back walks to begin the inning, Tyler Simon singled to the pitcher to load the bases for A.J. Willoughby, who singled to score Garrett HodgesJaylen Smith double to right center during the ensuing at-bat and scored a pair to give the Owls the 3-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Willoughby scored on a ground ball from Tyler Tolve and an RBI single from David Chabut plated Smith.

The Minutemen plated their only runs of the contest in the third inning to cut the lead to 5-2.

After a scoreless fourth inning from both sides, Kennesaw State added a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Jake Franklin launched a one-out double off of the right-field wall to score Chabut and Smith. After reaching third base on a fly out, Franklin scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.

With one out in the sixth inning and facing a full count, Tolve smoked the baseball to right field for his first home run of the season and to give the Owls a 12-2 advantage.

Ryan Kennedy starting on the mound for the Owls and pitched 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out four batters. Brison FinneyMonty Horn and Deviner McCray combined for three innings of shutout baseball.

The Owls look for the series sweep tomorrow at noon inside Stillwell Stadium.
