LakePoint, Ga. – For the third-straight season, ASUN Conference Hall of Fame and FGCU alum Chris Sale will start the Major League Baseball All Star Game for the American League. Corey Kluber and Jacob deGrom also received invites to the All-Star game giving the ASUN three pitchers in the All-Star Game, most of any conference in the nation.
This season, the Boston Red Sox ace is 10-4 with an AL leading 2.23 ERA, a MLB leading 188 strikeouts and 13.1 K/9. Sale joins Hall of Famers Lefty Gomez and Robin Roberts as one of three pitchers in All-Star Game history to make at least three-consecutive All-Star Game starts. Opposing Sale for the second straight season is Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals. Sale and Scherzer are the first starters to start consecutive years for the first time since 1939-40.
Stetson will also be well represented at the Midsummer Classic, as Kluber of the Cleveland Indians and deGrom of the New York Mets received nods. Kluber will not pitch in the game after suffering a minor knee injury in his last start on July 12. The reigning AL Cy Young winner owns a 12-5 record with a 2.76 ERA with 132 Ks, leading the Indians to first place in the AL Central. Fellow Hatter, deGrom, is enjoying the best season of his MLB career. This season, the Mets' ace owns a 5-4 record with an MLB leading ERA of 1.68. He's struckout 149 batters in 123.1 innings of work.
The 89th edition of the MLB All-Star Game will happen on Tuesday, July 17th. The game can be seen on FOX with the first pitch coming at 8 PM ET.
