JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - No. 4 North Florida collected an opening night win at the 2018 ASUN Conference Baseball Championship behind a gem from ace Frank German. The righty dominated No. 3 Kennesaw State to lead the Ospreys to a 7-1 win in game three of the day.
It was a pitcher's duel for most of the night as both aces, UNF's German and Kennesaw State's AJ Moore, put in great performances. Moore went 6.1 innings tonight and limited the Ospreys to one run for most of his outing. German took it up another level as he pitched a complete game and only allowed one run.
With both starting pitchers on top of their games, runs were at a premium and the large crowd had to wait until the fourth inning for the first run. Blake Voyles hit a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jay Prather then hit an RBI single to right field that allowed Voyles to score to five North Florida the 1-0 lead. Moore got a big strikeout, one of his nine tonight, to end the threat in that inning.
North Florida's offense came to life in the seventh inning when they busted the game wide open after scoring five runs. The Osprey catch Rey Gonzalez singled and stole second base to get in scoring position. Chris Berry ripped an RBI single through the left side to make it 2-0 in favor of the Ospreys. Voyles came up with another clutch hit as he brought home two runners with a single to left field as North Florida took control.
The Owls were unable to mount a comeback as German struck out nine batters on the night without allowing a walk. No. 4 North Florida will take on River City rival No. 2 Jacksonville on Thursday night after both teams picked up wins today. The Owls will be back in action against No. 1 Stetson at 3 PM on Thursday and will have to win to keep their season alive.
