Hatters Get Strong Pitching; Eagles, Dolphins, Spartans Earn @ASUNBSB Wins

LakePoint, Ga. - Midweek action saw four ASUN Conference Baseball teams secure victories, as FGCU and Stetson scored double-digit runs. USC Upstate and Jacksonville also were victorious as league teams prepare for another full weekend slate coming up next.

The No. 18-ranked Hatters got another strong pitching performance from Joey Gonzalez, who went seven innings, striking out seven and only allowing four hits. Austin Wood and Jeremy Orbik each pitched an inning to complete the shutout. Stetson's offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Cardieri delivered the first two runs on a two-run double to center field. Eric Foggo slugged a two-run homer in the sixth as the Hatters were off an running. Mike Spooner and Jacob Koos delivered some insurance runs in the seventh as Stetson improved to 10-1 on the year with tonight's 10-0 shutout against Wagner. 

FGCU's offense remained scorching hot as the Eagles demolished Florida A&M's pitching staff for a second-straight day with a 15-7 win today. Last night, FGCU scored 13 runs in extra innings for a win, while today they scored 15 runs on 18 hits. Kohl Gilmore went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Eric Gonzalez topped him with a 4-for-5 performance and four runs batted in. Gonzalez slugged two homers, while Gilmore and Richie Garcia each had one. Gonzalez ended up just a double shy of the cycle. FGCU was up 3-0 early, but found themselves trailing 5-4 in the fourth. A six-run inning erased that deficit and the Eagles cruised the rest of the way.

Spencer Stockton picked up his first win of the season for the Dolphins, as Jacksonville won 4-2 against in-state rival South Florida on Wednesday night. Stockton went six innings, striking out eight and only allowing four hits. Chris Mauloni came on for four outs and secured his fifth save of the season. Ruben Someillian had a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Chris Lehane had two hits, while the Dolphins combined for 10 hits on the night. Jacksonville jumped out to a 4-0 lead, taking advantage on the base paths with some aggressive running to score two runs.  

USC Upstate earned another road victory as the Spartans won 7-3 at Charleston Southern. The Spartans got off to a perfect start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as Kyle Gensler had an RBI single and Will Hardigree followed suit for the 2-0 lead. The Spartans found themselves trailing 3-2 in the seventh, Toran Shahidi and Hardigree delivered back-to-back RBI singles to take the lead. Pat Raiff added some insurance with a sac fly as Upstate regained the lead. Gensler collected his second RBI in the eighth inning as the Spartans bullpen shut the door late for Charleston Southern. Grant Hoppock earned his second win of the season out of the bullpen, allowing only one hit in relief. Trey Van der Welde struck out four in 2.2 innings of work to close out the night on the mound.
