LakePoint, Ga. - Despite Josh Dye's impressive start on the bump and Nick Rivera's third home run of the NCAA College Baseball Tournament, the No. 24 FGCU Eagles were unable to overcome A10 Conference winners Davidson, in a 2-1 loss this Saturday.
Despite a lack of hitting, lefty Josh Dye was able to keep his Eagles within striking distance for the majority of the afternoon, holding the Wildcats to nine knocks and two earned runs over a career-best eight innings of work. Davidson would strike first in the second inning after stringing together three straight singles. With men on the corners and zero outs in the frame, Dye proceeded to retire three straight batters to conclude the inning, and go on to sit down 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. The 'Cats would add another run in the eighth off a pair of hits and a walk, as Dye finished his night on 124 pitches with five strikeouts.
The Eagles failed to produce more than four hits heading into the final inning before ASUN Conference Player of the Year Nick Rivera lifted his 20th home run of 2017 to right center. Rivera has hit three long balls through his side's first two NCAA Tournament contests, and is one of only 11 Division I players to reach 20 this season. The next three Eagle batters would be retired after Rivera's bomb, as the side experienced its first loss of the tournament.
Spencer Levine registered the only extra-base hit of the night, as all nine of Davidson's hits came on singles. The backstop is 4-for-6 (.666) during the tournament and has reached first safely in his last three contests. Richie Garcia extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games with a single in the fourth, as the ASUN All-Freshman has gotten on-base in his previous 18 appearances.
With their loss the Eagles will face elimination against regional hosts, and No. 2 national seed, North Carolina on Sunday at 1:00 PM in Chapel Hill.
