LakePoint, Ga. - Jacksonville continues its winning streak while USC Upstate drops in-state rival for the second time in three games, as ASUN Conference Baseball picks up a pair of wins this Wednesday.
President Bill Clinton was in office the last season Jacksonville won 11 games in a row, as the Dolphins reached that mark for the first time since 1994 on Wednesday night against Florida A&M. JU beat the Rattlers by a count of 10-6, with all of FAMU's runs coming in the final two innings of the contest. Sophomore Angel Camacho has been one of the primary drivers of his team's current streak, as the first baseman has hit in each of Jacksonville's games during the recent streak. Camacho's 11-game hit streak earned him back-to-back ASUN Player of the Week honors, as the Dolphin hitter finished with a 2-for-4, single RBI, night against Florida A&M.
Nathan Koslowski and Dakota Julylia each recorded three knocks with a pair of runs driven in, while freshman Scott Dubrule went 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Right-hander Greg Shannahan earned his first win of the year after coming in relief of starter Mark Potter. Neither hurler gave up a run, while combining for five hits and three walks. Mike Cassala tossed two shutout innings as well, making his third perfect appearance out of the pen in 2017. Camacho is averaging .420 during his current streak while slugging .640.
USC Upstate earned ASUN Baseball's second win of Wednesday night, outscoring visiting Charleston Southern 5-1 and outhitting the Buccanneers 11-4 to secure a season series victory. Seven Spartans recorded knocks on the night, while senior Hunter Gilbert collected a team-high three hits on four at-bats. Charlie Carpenter his his seventh long ball of the season during the bottom of the first inning to give Upstate an early 2-1 lead, while Gilbert tallied his first triple of the year in the fourth.
Blake Whitney moved to 5-4 on the year after coming in relief at the start of the fifth inning, facing the minimum in his single frame. Four Spartan pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts on the night, on the way to issuing just two walks. Freshman Conner Campbell provided another top-notch relief performance, allowing a single runner in his two innings out of the bullpen. The righty has played well recently, holding an ERA of 2.40 over his last seven trips to the mound, in comparison to his season average of 4.07 for the season.
Jacksonville tries to continue its winning streak with a series against Kennesaw State this weekend, as the Dolphins look for their first 9-1 start to conference play in over 15 years. Stetson and USC Upstate pair up on ESPN3 while North Florida and FGCU faceoff on ASUN.TV.
