DELAND, Fla. - No. 3 FGCU won the first three pairs to defeat No. 4 Coastal Carolina in ASUN Beach Volleyball Championship action. With the No. 2 and 4 pairs still in action, play was halted for just over three hours due to thunderstorms that rolled into DeLand, Fla., and resumed at 5:10 p.m.
The Eagles' Snowy Burnam and Kayla Whetstone took care of Kate Federico and Tanner Gauthier by two 21-18 scores at the No. 3 position. Coastal's No. 5 pair of Anett Nemeth and Kalin Eske tied the match up by defeating Cortney VanLiew and Alayna Ryan, 21-16, 21-17.
FGCU's No. 1 pair of Amanda Carroll and Kirstine Garder needed three sets to down Sydney Alvis and Leah Hardeman (14-21, 24-22, 15-8) to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead before the rain began to fall.
Once play resumed, the Chanticleers' No. 4 pair of Aleksandra Djuric and Shelby Ladewig downed Emma Hansen and Giovanna Borgiotti, 11-21, 21-19, 15-11. With the match tied 2-2, FGCU claimed a straight-set victory at No. 2 as Katherine Puisis and Karissa Rhoades defeated Anaiah Boyer and Lucy Campbell, 21-6, 21-14.
With the win, FGCU advances to take on UNF in a rematch of Thursday's quarterfinal Saturday at 1 PM ET.
